Hundreds of BWHers, patients, families, friends and even pets braved warnings of stormy weather to support the American Heart Association (AHA) at Saturday's Boston Heart Walk.
The rain held off as Team Brigham and Women's/Faulkner Hospitals joined 58 other teams on the Charles River Esplanade for a one-, three- or six-mile walk, refreshments and activities.
Under the leadership of Boston Heart Walk Chairman and BWH President Gary Gottlieb and bolstered by the steadfast spirit of the BWH community, the hospital assembled Boston's largest team of walkers and raised the most money for the AHA, an organization that is currently funding $7.5 million in research at BWH. The walk provided BWH with an avenue to thank the AHA for its commitment to better the hospital's patient care delivery, innovative teaching programs and groundbreaking research.
“Thanks to your enthusiasm and support, we registered nearly 400 walkers and surpassed our goal of raising $110,000 for the AHA,” Gottlieb said. “Our fundraising success will further the AHA's mission of fighting cardiovascular disease and stroke.”
As of yesterday, BWH raised almost $132,000. Donations are accepted until Oct. 31.
To celebrate, BWH team captains rolled up their sleeves to serve ice cream sundaes in the Pod B Cafeteria Wednesday afternoon to AHA Heart Walkers and those BWH staff who supported them.
